| When this area of forest was first discovered, it had been said that it was "so thick that for a mile at a time we could not find the place the size of a hand, where the sun could penetrate, even in the clearest day...". Much of this still exists here today, and has been set aside for scientific observation, as well as for protection of it's natural beauty. The lake at R. B. Winter State Park is always about 50 °F (10 °C), because much of the water actually comes from directly underground. A lot of the land at this park has remained untouched since it was last logged in 1850. |
